This tour, led by Alphawood Gallery Associate Megan Moran, is called Religion, Rituals & Martyrs of AIDS. To find solace from the omnipresent sorrow and suffering of AIDS, many sought refuge in spirituality and religion. However, the response to the epidemic from many traditional religions, particularly Christian fundamentalists, was to use conservative rhetoric to incite hatred and violence against people with the virus. Artists created work to combat this stigma, some choosing to expose Christian hypocrisy, while others aimed to restore its core messages of radical love and belonging. This tour will examine those artistic responses as well as the rituals that emerged as another symptom of HIV/AIDS, performed to prevent death, meditate on mortality, and memorialize martyrs of the disease. Works by Ann P. Meredith, David Wojnarowicz, Keith Haring, Jerome Caja, Robert Mapplethorpe, Michael Ehle and more are included in this tour of the exhibition.
